Ask Dr. Amy

Advice for the lovelorn, messed-up, and just plain confused*.

Dear Dr. Amy,

I work with this guy who won't stop talking to me during the day when I'm trying to get my work done. He's always stopping by my cube to chat, and he tells me really personal things, UNSOLICITED things, things I wouldn't even share with my best friend who I've known since high school. He's one of those guys who thinks it's cool to share EVERY detail of his life. He constantly talks about his "latest online conquest" with girls who I'm pretty sure are way too young for him (and who may not even be girls), and he wants to know what I think of his sci-fi/horror/romantic comedy screenplay (it sucks). He's starting to creep me out. Also, I'm pretty sure he still lives with his mom. How can I ask him to shut the hell up and go away without hurting his feelings? I'm afraid he might try to kill my fish if I set him off.

Dear Fed Up,

It sounds like you have quite a problem on your hands. Have you tried politely asking him to leave and explaining that you have work to do? If that doesn't work, I suggest you take this up with your manager. Your co-worker is creating a hostile work environment, whether inadvertently or not, and that's no place for you or your fish. Once you report the harassment to your manager, it is up to him or her to address the issue with your co-worker. In the meantime, I suggest you try a few tricks, like listening to music with headphones on so he can't engage you in conversation, or doing your work in a conference room where he can't find you, or better yet, introducing him to the new guy in the office who knows someone who knows someone who works at Disney.
